“Forward” in 2018

I haven’t been one to make New Year’s resolutions since I tend to fall into the Obliger(with a touch of Rebel) category of Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies which means that I tend not to be able to follow through on resolutions.  However this one word idea has become more and more popular over the years.  There are a few places on the internet to find information on choosing one word “resolutions” such as One Little Word, My One Word and others.

Basically the idea is that you choose one word to guide you for the year instead of making a list of resolutions that you may or may not be able to keep depending on your personality (I highly recommend taking Gretchen Rubin’s quiz, knowing your tendency can be really eye opening in how you handle yourself and sometimes helps you deal with other people).  It is your watchword for the year and to help you focus on your priorities for the year.

This year my word will be forward. Forward is an adverb that means “Onward so as to make progress” according to the Oxford English Dictionary (and a few other definitions).

I thought about a few different words but “forward” seems to be the best choice for 2018.  I have to move forward in a lot of different ways in order to end 2018 where I want to.  I only listed 3 things on my cover photo even though there are many more areas of my life those are the top three that are important for this entry.

  1.  Health – if you’ve been a subscriber you know that I’m interested in trying to get healthier.  I have posted about that a few times: Halfway to Motivation and Tuesday Afternoon Misadventures in Running.   I put my health as my number one priority because without my health I cannot do anything else which includes spending time with my family and friends.  I have definitely felt better in the last quarter of the year when I’ve made some concentrated efforts towards improving my health so I hope to continue. I have made some progress in 2017 but need to make more progress in 2018.
  2. Family – We are still living with Babci but by the end of 2018 we should be able to be back in our own house again.  I am also continuing to focus on trying to be present with both the Mr. and the Munchkin to make the time we do have better.  The Mr. has recently taken a job that has him working overnight which means during the weeks he’s leaving for work as I am getting ready for bed resulting in even more limited time.  I have recently started using the Moment app (only available on the Apple app store) to keep tabs on how much time I’m spending on my phone and it gives me reminders and nudges to put my phone down.
  3. Blog – I have been toying with this blog for a while and I’m hoping to make it a more regular fixture in 2018.  I get a lot of enjoyment from writing and I need to utilize this outlet more often.

There you have it, I will hopefully keep moving forward through 2018 continuing to gain on the progress made during 2017.

What is your one word resolution or regular resolutions for 2018?

  1. Focus is my word for 2018. It came to me while sitting on the edge of the bed putting on my socks. Spirit must have been in a humorous mood that day. Like you I need to get healthy and want to write in my blog more often. I need to be more sharing of not just my art and photography but my thoughts. It’s so difficult and I’m not sure way. Your post is encouraging, thank you.

    1. Focus is a great word! It can be difficult to let people into your real world but just be authentic and it will show. I’m glad you found it encouraging! Happy 2018!
